In the latest report by the Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA), released in October 2023, we delve into interchangeable lens camera sales, digital camera sales, and lens camera sales. The results also encompasses data from the entire years of 2022 and 2020.
Zooming in on the digital camera market, October 2023 witnesses a decline of 32,000 units compared to the previous year, 2022. However, when we pan the lens to capture the broader perspective year over year, 2023 is closely mirroring the trends set by its predecessor. With a mere two months remaining in the calendar, we anticipate a marginal fluctuation in 2023 compared to 2022. Notably, the absence of any new camera announcements in the fourth quarter diminishes the likelihood of witnessing substantial gains in the closing moments of 2023.
Despite the absence of groundbreaking camera releases in Q4, the Black Friday sales frenzy proved to be a battlefield of intensified competition, with sales exhibiting a more assertive stance compared to the preceding year, 2022.
Narrowing down the data, focusing on interchangeable camera sales, 2023 captures a notable surge, boasting a 5 percent increase over 2022. The lens-swapping enthusiasts witnessed a total of 5,060,355 units shipped in 2023, a commendable uptick from the 4,819,690 units recorded in the year 2022.
These figures paint a vivid picture of an ongoing trend that has unfolded since 2016: a palpable preference for mirrorless camera sales within the market while we see fixed lens digital cameras continue to decline, signaling a continuous slide in consumer interest.
