The Smallrig 60W RC 60B boasts compact portability, exuding a robust and solid feel at 1300 grams. Even the USB cable stands out with its pliable, non-rigid design, offering a higher quality than the standard cables provided with most electronics. The design marks a slight departure from its predecessors like the RC 120B or 220B, featuring an all-black exterior with subtle red lines reminiscent of Canon L-series glass.
The test kit we received included the RC 60B light, a hand grip, a light stand adaptor, a power bank clamp, and a mini reflector. The only omission from the package is the mini diffuser, a highly recommended accessory. The diffuser imparts a softer light, albeit with a reduction in brightness. As a bi-color light, it provides white light within the range of 2700 to 6500 degrees.
Who Is it For?
At 60 watts with a diffuser in place, the RC 60B may not wield enough power to serve as a key light. However, it can excel as a fill light in smaller studios. The true brilliance of this light shines through in its portability and effectiveness as a handheld light, especially in low-light environments where simplicity reigns.
When connected to the mains through a USB-C power delivery port, the RC 60B can deliver continuous power up to 100 watts, but when untethered, it lasts for a commendable 40 minutes. Charging time varies, with a full charge achieved in under an hour using a 100-watt charger. Note that using an iPad or iPhone charger, which delivers only 7-10 watts, will result in a much longer charging time.
Color Accuracy
Smallrig boasts a CRI of 97+, TLCI of 98+, SSI average of 89, and a UV of 0.0001 at 5600K—a rating consistent with their more powerful studio lights. However, like any light source, the RC 60B is not completely silent, featuring an audible fan. Yet, the fan noise remains unobtrusive, measuring around 27 dB at one meter from the source. In most scenarios, the fan is virtually undetectable unless you're within about two feet, emitting a soft, dull sound that is unlikely to disrupt.
Should You Get It?
The RC 60B stands out as an excellent portable light, offering 60 watts of power and a color temperature range from 2700-6500. However, for those seeking a key light or a fill light that doesn't require frequent relocation, I recommend considering the Smallrig RC120B priced at $220.99. While it may not be designed for portability, it provides double the wattage for those who prioritize power.
