The TIPA World Awards are held annually and all but one camera manufacturer managed to get an award. Some camera makers like Canon and Sony managed to get five awards. Did Canon managed to secure best camera, best camera for photography and even best camera phone. Or did Sony take these trophies?
Best Camera Innovation was awarded to the Canon R3 for the Eye Control autofocus technology. It is of note that this was first introduced many years ago with the Canon EOS 3.
“TIPA members who tested Eye Control AF were intrigued and impressed by how rapidly focus point was attained and displayed in the camera’s OLED electronic viewfinder.”
“They noted how the AF system could then continue to keep focus on the subject via the R3’s AF tracking technology – including humans, animals, and vehicles – due to its deep learning, AI autofocus system and the camera’s very fast and responsive back-illuminated stacked sensor and Digic X processor.”
Best Professional 8K Hybrid Camera was awarded to the Canon R5c . This is a new award and also seems made up just for the R5c. With 8K becoming a standard in high end cameras, will the Canon R5c be able to hold on to this trophy next year?
Best Full Frame Wide Angle Zoom lens was awarded to the Canon RF 14-35 F4 L IS USM, and the Best Macro Lens award for the RF 100mm F2.8 L IS USM Macro lens. The last award was for the Canon Pixma MegaTank G650 photo printer.
Sony earned five awards from TIPA. They received Best Full Frame Expert Camera for the Sony a74, a camera released in 2021 that has dominated its segment for most of 2022. Sony received an award for Best Vlogger Camera going to the Sony ZV-E10, which all things considered is a solid vlogging camera in direct competition with the Canon R50.
The Sony FE 24-70 F2.8 GM mark II earned Best Full Frame Standard Zoom Lens while the popular Sony FE 70-200 F2.8 GM OSS earned Best Full Frame Telephoto Zoom Lens. The fifth award goes to a smartphone so we will just ignore that one.
Fujifilm received the Best Medium Format Camera award for the Fujifilm GFX 50S II while Nikon picked up two awards. Best Full Frame Professional Camera went to the Nikon Z9, released in October 2021 and has only been held back by production issues. Best APS-C camera award went to the Nikon Z Fc.
Like Fujifilm, Leis only managed to pick up a single award, and it was for the Best Rangefinder Camera for the M11, not the M11 Monochrome, which was just released this week.
Panasonic managed to receive two awards. Best Professional 4K hybrid camera was awarded to the Panasonic Lumix GH6, hardly a surprise as it is a solid video centric camera. It's just a shame it didn't get the new Phase Detect autofocus system released with the S5 mark II. No worries as Panasonic managed to get the Best professional video camera for the Lumix BS1H.
OM Systems hasn't been releasing a lot of cameras since it was spin off from Olympus, but what they released has been a solid effort. The OM-1 released at the same time as the GH6, received Best Micro Four-Thirds Camera award.
Left out of the awards was Pentax, the only remaining camera manufacturer dedicated to DSLRs. Not only are they dedicated to them, they seem to have uttering no interest in the mirrorless world.
